Four everyday ways to style with steam

After a shower, after a bad night’s sleep, on dry bangs, or on a big day: where a steam styling iron fits into real life.

The Steam Magic™ Styling Iron looks like a regular straightener on purpose, so there’s very little to learn. What’s different is how you can use it. Here are four everyday moments where it helps.

1. After washing your hair

Instead of reaching for the blow-dryer, gently towel-dry your hair from roots to ends until it’s damp and no longer dripping. Then style it in two passes:

  1. Take a large section and glide the iron slowly from roots to ends. The slow pass gives the plates time to turn the water on your hair into steam.
  2. Leave that section alone for 2–3 seconds. Don’t touch it with your hands or a comb.
  3. Comb it, then make a second, quicker pass.
  4. Wait another 2–3 seconds, then comb until the hair no longer feels sticky.

2. When you wake up with a flattened style

You slept on the style you loved yesterday. Lightly mist just the part that’s out of place, comb and separate it, and repeat the two passes above. You only need to restyle that section, not start over.

3. On dry bangs and ends

Before you cut off bangs or ends that feel dry, try misting them and using the same two-pass method. It’s a quick way to soften their look and feel, and easy to repeat.

4. On a day with more than one look

Weddings, photo shoots and trips can call for more than one style in a day. To change a section, mist it, then restyle it with the iron. Stylists can use the same method when a client wants something adjusted.

Before you start

Hair should be damp, never dripping, and the iron should be kept away from water. Read the user manual and safety guide first. For more detail on technique, see the how-to guide.
